Resolutoin and Pledge in Support of PRT

Intro How it Works  Construction   Economics  Point-To-Point Transport  Capacity   Concerns  PRT and the Environment SF Bay Area Further Information

Whereas funding of the costly BART extension to San Jose becomes increasingly unlikely;

Whereas to attract the Olympics, the Bay Area needs a world-class transportation system;

Whereas among Milpitas and County residents traffic congestion is a top concern;

Whereas Americans' primary transportation mode, the car, has led to 1) dependence on huge amounts of imported fossil fuels, 2) the paving of our public land for roads, highways, and parking lots, 3) uncounted health issues stemming from air pollution, and 4) 40,000 deaths and many more injuries each year;

Whereas automated Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) systems through their elevated, on-demand design show tremendous potential to serve as a safer, quicker, and less expensive alternative to the automobile;

Whereas PRT systems promise 1) zero emissions in operation, 2) one fourth the energy use per passenger mile, 3) subsidy-free operation, 4) virtually no footprint, and 5) little or no waiting for cabs that operate 24/7;

Whereas, of the transit systems that incorporate separated guideways, off-line stations, automated control, magnetic drive, and 24/7 on-demand service, PRT is closest to implementation;

and Whereas, 1) a PRT "ferry" crossing of the railroad tracks to connect Yosemite with Curtis is a logical first project, 2) an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) is the first step toward such a crossing, and 3) an EIR will investigate the impacts of PRT in areas of concern such as traffic congestion, pollution, noise, etc.

Therefore, we the undersigned 1) recommend that the Milpitas City Council facilitate an EIR for a PRT crossing of the railroad tracks, and 2) promise to contribute at least $5 each after 90% of the EIR funding is secured.

Return to "Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) for Milpitas"

Express your values -- early and often!

If you care about reliable, safe, cost-effective transportation. Or clean air. Or energy security.
Then check out Personal Rapid Transit (PRT). On paper, it makes sense. Let's find out whether the advantages PRT promises for Milpitas residents are actually available to us. This petition requests the Milpitas City Council to facilitate the study of a PRT "ferry" to connect Yosemite Drive with Curtis Avenue over the railroad tracks. Thanks for taking time to make Milpitas a better place for all of us.

The Sunnyhills Neighborhood Association (SNA) wants a PRT feeder between their neighborhood (in the northeast corner of Milpitas) and the LRT and BART stations near the Great Mall. Learn more at http://www.electric-bikes.com/prt-sna.htm
