eGO Electric Scooter: Trouble Shooting

Use this troubleshooting guide to help you identify and solve any problems you may have with your eGO Cycle. Please refer to the applicable sections in the manual before attempting to repair or adjust your eGO Cycle. If you have problems with your eGO that are not addressed in this guide, give us a call and we’ll help you get it straightened out.

1. Symptom – Chatter, snapping or popping sound when accelerating or decelerating

2. Symptom – Nothing happens when throttle is turned

3. Symptom – The motor makes noise but the cycle doesn’t move when throttle is turned

4. Symptom – Shorter than expected operational range

5. Symptom – Red charge indicator light does not turn on when charger is plugged in

6. Symptom – Rubbing or scraping noise when riding

7. Symptom – Range indicator reads erratically

8. Symptom – Soft, spongy or loose steering or handling

9. Symptom – Stiff or difficult steering

10. Symptom – Batteries won’t fully charge

11. Symptom – Range indicator reads full range only while eGO is plugged in

12. Symptom – Range gauge lights are flashing

13. Symptom – Headlights don't work

14. Symptom – Saddle is loose

15. Symptom – Handbrakes do not work properly

16. Symptom – Handbrakes squeak

17. Symptom – Clunking feel or sound on bumps

1. Symptom - chatter, snapping or popping sound when accelerating or decelerating

Cause – Drive belt isn’t properly tensioned
Solution – Properly tension drive belt (see owner's manual)

Cause – Rear wheel isn’t properly aligned
Solution – Align rear wheel (see owner's manual)

Cause – Rear-wheel-retaining nuts are loose
Solution – Tension belt, align rear wheel and tighten rear-wheel-retaining nuts


2. Symptom – Nothing happens when throttle is turned

Cause – Ignition isn’t turned on
Solution – Turn ignition on

Cause – Batteries are dead (check range indicator for battery status)
Solution – Recharge batteries

Cause – Safety cutout mechanism has activated
Solution – Turn key off, then back on

Cause – Throttle was twisted when ignition was turned on
Solution – Return throttle to stop position then restart

Cause – Internal wiring or controller failure
Solution - Contact an eGO service technician to inspect and diagnose


3. Symptom – The motor makes noise but the cycle doesn’t move when throttle is turned

Cause – Internal belt is broken
Solution – Replace the internal belt.

4. Symptom – Shorter than expected operational range

Cause – Batteries are low
Solution – Charge batteries

Cause –Batteries are old or damaged
Solution – Have an authorized eGO technician test and replace batteries if necessary

Cause – Low tire pressure
Solution – Inflate tires to recommended pressure (70-80PSI)

Cause – brakes are dragging on wheels
Solution – adjust brake calipers to eliminate drag.

Cause – Excessive or aggressive starting and stopping
Solution – Accelerate slowly and try to maintain constant speed


5. Symptom – Red charge indicator light does not turn on when charger is plugged in

Cause – Extension cord or outlet is faulty or not turned on
Solution – Check cord and outlet power

Cause – Internal charger is damaged
Solution –Have an authorized eGO technician test and replace internal charger if necessary

Cause – Batteries are old or damaged
Solution – Have an authorized eGO technician test and replace batteries if necessary

Cause – Charger protection fuse is blown
Solution – Contact an eGO service technician to examine and replace fuse

6. Symptom – Rubbing or scraping noise when riding

Cause – Wheels are not properly aligned
Solution – Align wheels

Cause – Wheel-retaining nuts are loose
Solution – Tighten wheel-retaining nuts

Cause – Fender(s) are loose, bent, or out of alignment
Solution – Tighten and/or straighten fender(s). If fender is bent too badly to be straightened, replace it.


7. Symptom – Range indicator reads erratically

Cause – You are accelerating, decelerating, or climbing a hill while reading gauge
Solution – Stop or ride on flat ground while reading gauge

8. Symptom – Soft, spongy or loose steering or handling

Cause – Tires are under-inflated
Solution – Inflate tires to proper PSI

Cause –Wheel-retaining nuts are loose
Solution – Tighten wheel retaining nuts (see owner's manual)

Cause – Headset bearing is too loose
Solution – Set bearing to proper tension (see owner's manual)

Cause – Loose rear-triangle-to-chassis fasteners
Solution - Tighten rear-triangle-to-chassis fasteners with hex key

Cause – Loose handlebar
Solution – Tighten handlebar clamp bolts


9. Symptom – stiff or difficult steering

Cause –Headset bearing is too tight
Solution – Set bearing to proper tension

Cause – Front fork is damaged and wheel touches chassis
Solution – Have an authorized eGO service technician replace the fork.

Cause – Excessive weight in cargo baskets or on rear rack
Solution – Reduce amount of weight in cargo baskets and on rear rack.

10. Symptom – batteries won’t fully charge

Cause – Batteries are old or damaged
Solution – Have an authorized eGO technician test and replace batteries if necessary

Cause – Charger is damaged
Solution – Have an authorized eGO technician test and replace charger if necessary


11. Range indicator reads full range only while eGO is plugged in

Cause –Batteries are old or damaged
Solution – Have an authorized eGO technician test and replace batteries if necessary

12. Symptom – Range gauge lights are flashing

Cause – Batteries are low
Solution – Charge batteries


13. Symptom – Headlights don't work

Cause – Light switch isn’t on
Solution – turn switch on

Cause – one or both bulbs are burned out
Solution – replace bulb(s)

Cause – Wiring is broken or damaged
Solution –Inspect wire connections at the light fixtures.


14. Symptom – saddle is loose

Cause – Loose saddle-retaining bolt
Solution – Tighten retaining bolt

15. Symptom – handbrakes do not work properly

Cause – Improperly adjusted pads
Solution – Have a qualified technician properly adjust pads

Cause – Worn brake pads
Solution – Have qualified technician replace pads

Cause – Improperly adjusted brake cables
Solution – Have qualified technician adjust brake cables

Cause – Broken brake cable
Solution – Have qualified technician replace brake cable

Cause –Warped or “out-of-true” wheel
Solution –Have qualified technician repair or replace wheel


16. Symptom – handbrakes squeak

Cause – Improperly adjusted pads
Solution – Have qualified technician properly adjust pads

Cause – Worn brake pads
Solution – Have qualified technician replace pads

17. Symptom – Clunking feel or sound on bumps

Cause – Loose battery hold-down strap
Solution – Open battery door and tighten black battery strap

Cause – Loose headset bearing
Solution – Tighten headset (see owner's manual)
