eGO Electric Scooter: Frequently Asked Questions

eGO Cycle 2 (Classic and LX)

Not quite a bike, scooter, or moped, but the best of all three.

The eGO Cycle 2 is easy to ride like a bicycle, designed to get the job done, and built to last.

The eGO chassis is sculpture in motion. Precision tooled T6000 aircraft-grade aluminum is precisely aligned and TIG welded into an incredibly strong yet arrestingly beautiful monocoque chassis with room inside to hold batteries, electronics, and drive components. The chassis is heat treated, sand blasted and silver anodized for strength, scratch resistance and exceptional durability.

The eGO Cycle 2 comes in three versions - Classic, LX and SE. The eGO Classic is perfect for casual commuters, errand runners and for RV users. The eGO LX and SE are designed for daily commuters and errand runners who will be driving in moderate to heavy traffic. The LX and SE are fully equipped for registration in any state and include front and rear turn signals, left grip lighting, turn signal and horn controls, backlit speedometer/odometer.

All three eGO models can go 23 mph in "Go Fast" mode and up to 25 miles in "Go Far" mode. (Add 50% more range with the Extended Range Battery Pack (XR Pack) accessory.) Acceleration is 0 to 20 mph in less than 4 seconds. Relaxing the throttle automatically activates the regenerative braking feature and brake light. For more stopping power, there's a front disc brake and a rear caliper brake.

1. I just purchased my eGO Cycle. What should I do?

Read your Owner's Manual...please.  Then read your Owner's Manual again.  If you have any questions about how to use and care for your eGO, please contact your authorized eGO Dealer.  Be sure to comply with all local and/or State laws for riding your Cycle on roads.  And please be safe...wear a helmet and a smile.

2. I lost my keys! What do I do?

First, look for them again. Check the sofa cushions. Look in the pockets of your other pants. Look in the washing machine. If you still don’t find them, contact your eGO Dealer and let them know the VIN for your eGO Cycle.  Your Dealer can obtain duplicate keys for you.

3. How do I adjust the hand brakes?

The best thing to do is to let your authorized eGO Dealer handle all repairs and adjustments.  That's their job!  If you want to go-it-alone, brake adjustment is not too difficult.  Follow the procedure in the owner’s manual, outlined below:

  1. Place a 6”X6” block of wood under the chassis so that the wheel you’re interested in is slightly off the ground.
  2. Spin the wheel to make sure the wheel is perfectly round and doesn’t wobble from side to side. If the wheel is out of round or wobbles back and forth, take it to a bicycle shop for professional attention.
  3. Turn the brake-cable-adjusting barrel counterclockwise until the brake pads just touch the rim.
  4. Turn the adjusting barrel 1/2 turn clockwise to back the pads away from the rim a little.
  5. Spin the wheel again. If the brake pads hit the rim, turn the adjusting barrel another ½ turn clockwise. Repeat this step until the wheel spins freely.
  6. Turn the adjusting-barrel locknut clockwise as far as it will go to lock the adjusting barrel into place.

If the above procedure fails to return the hand brakes to proper adjustment, you should have them checked by a qualified technician. Your local bicycle shop can handle this procedure.

4. How do I recharge my eGO?

Simple. Plug it into any wall outlet. The integrated smart-charger will take it from there.  Connecting the plug to a household outlet will start the charging process.  When the steady green light illuminates on the dash, your batteries are fully charged. Note: Use only grounded three prong 110V power outlets.

5-6

5. The Range Indicator on my eGO reads low when I accelerate or climb hills, but higher when I stop or ride at a constant speed on level ground. Which one is a more accurate gauge of range?

The Range Indicator continuously monitors the state of charge of the batteries and the load they are under. So to get an accurate reading of range under average (i.e. non-changing) riding conditions, you must be stopped.

6. How do I store my eGO?

Your eGO cycle contains no artificial additives or preservatives, yet it will keep indefinitely, even without refrigeration, provided you take care of the batteries properly! In general, there are two things to keep in mind:

7-8

7. Can I wash my eGO?

You bet. Wash it with warm water and mild soap. Don’t use bleach or anything abrasive. Try not to spray water down in the front grill. A little won’t hurt anything. Just don’t soak it.

8. What if the inside of the chassis accidentally gets soaked?

If you somehow soak the inside of the chassis, do not ride it until it has completely dried. There is a small chance that damage to the electronics could result. One more thing. You might be tempted to remove the dash or deck plate to dry things off. Heed this warning: DO NOT REMOVE THE DASH OR DECK PLATE UNLESS YOU HAVE SPECIFIC AND CLEAR DIRECTIONS FROM US TO DO SO.  INSIDE THE CHASSIS ARE DANGEROUS HIGH-CURRENT WIRES. THESE WIRES CONTAIN ENOUGH ELECTRICITY TO HARM YOU!

9-10

9. What if it’s raining while I’m riding my eGO? Will it shock me?

No. Don’t worry. It is impossible to get shocked while riding your eGO cycle, even if you ride in a downpour. All high-current wires and circuitry are fully insulated. By the way, may we take this opportunity to say that we don’t recommend you ride your eGO cycle in the rain, not because you could get electrocuted, but because wet roads tend to be slippery and dangerous.

10. Is my eGO Cycle hard to maintain?

Nope. In fact, if you can operate a can of WD-40, you can handle all the routine maintenance your eGO will require. Routine maintenance includes keeping batteries properly charged, brakes properly adjusted, tires properly inflated, and fasteners properly tightened. In the event that your eGO requires maintenance beyond the routine, review the troubleshooting guide or call us. We’ll help you get the problem straightened out.

11-12

11. How fast is my eGO?

In the "Go Fast" mode, your eGO is electronically limited to a top speed of 24 mph. It will reach this speed in about 4-5 seconds. Really throws your bangs back! In the "Go Far" mode, top speed is limited to 17 mph, and it takes a little longer to get there.

12. How far will my eGO take me?

Your eGO cycle will go 20-25 miles in the "Go Far" mode and 20+ miles in the "Go Fast" mode on a full charge. Of course many factors, such as the terrain, your size, riding habits, and the battery condition all play a role in determining range, so your actual range may vary. Our range testing was done with a 210 lb. driver on a relatively straight, flat course.

13-14

13. How long does it take to recharge the batteries?

If the batteries are fully discharged, it’ll take about 3 hours to charge them to 80% capacity, and another 2-4 hours to fully charge them.  If you use the optional external fast charger, it will only take about 2 hours to fully charge.

14. What kind of batteries does my eGO have?

eGO batteries are sealed deep-discharge gel lead-acid batteries specially designed for the rigorous demands of electric vehicles. Your eGO carries 2 of them.

15-16

15. How long will the batteries last before they need to be replaced?

Your eGO batteries are good for hundreds of charge-discharge cycles and will provide years of dependable service. Typically, they’ll carry you up to 8000 miles before they’ll need replacing. To extend the battery life, avoid completely discharging them, and always keep your eGO plugged in while you’re not riding it.

16. How do I replace the batteries?

With the eGO Cycle2, replacing the batteries is a snap.  Buy a replacement battery pack from us or your dealer.  Remove the battery door (allen wrench is the only tool you need) and a few snaps and clicks later, you will be up and running again.  The battery pack will ship with simple instructions.  You can return your old batteries to us, in the box your new batteries came in, and we will recycle them.

17-18

17. Where was my eGO made?

All eGO Cycles (first generation) were made by hand in the U.S.A. We have two factories in the USA that made the first generation eGO Cycle, Fairhope, Alabama and Providence, Rhode Island. All eGO Cycle 2's, LX's and Helio's are made in our factory in Taiwan.

18. Is there a danger of burning out the motor by riding up steep hills?

The heart of your eGO is a strong motor that can handle big hills. The eGO has thermal protection circuitry that automatically shuts the controller off in the unlikely event that it gets too hot. In any case we do not recommend stalling the motor with the throttle wide open. If the throttle is full on but your eGO is moving only slowly, release the throttle immediately.  Jump off, get yourself out of the situation and continue on your ride.

19-20

19. How do I protect my eGO? Can I lock it up?

The ignition switch is key-operated, so you can’t ride it without the key. However, some people will stop at nothing to do the wrong thing, so we recommend that you lock it up with a high-quality U-lock or cable lock whenever you park it in a public place. Run the lock bar or cable through the rear wheel and rear triangle and then around something immovable (like the end of a bike rack) if you can.

20. Is my eGO legal for use on public roads?

You can use your eGO cycle on public roads. However, laws governing vehicles like the eGO cycle vary widely from state to state, even town to town. What’s more, some places don’t have laws that specifically govern this type of vehicle. Visit our regulations page, and call your local police department or DMV for more information.

21-22

21. Do I need a license to ride my eGO cycle?

Laws vary from state to state. Some states require riders to be at least 16 and have a valid driver’s license. Some don’t. Call your local police department or DMV for more information.

22. If I am required to register my eGO cycle, what paperwork do I need?

It will vary from state to state, but in general to register your eGO cycle, you’ll most likely need:

23-24

23. What about insurance? Is it required?

Again, it varies from place to place. Call your local police department or DMV for more information.

24. Can I ride my eGO off-road?

We’d rather you didn’t. Although your eGO is very strong and sturdy, it is specifically designed for relatively smooth surfaces. Besides, off-road use, doing tricks and jumping will void your warranty.

25-26

25. How do I attach a license plate to the eGO if I need one?

The eGO Cycle 2 Classic does not have a license plate holder.  Our LX, SE and Helio models all have a license plate mount.  It is possible to upgrade your Classic to have a license plate mount.

26. Do we still use a plastic secondary drive pulley?

We are constantly improving all parts of the eGO Cycle as we learn more about how the eGO fleet is performing.  There are some discussions on web bulletin boards about the glass nylon pulley we used when we began shipping the eGO Cycle 2.  If the belt drive becomes loose, it may skip on the secondary drive pulley when under heavy load (acceleration/deceleration.)  If this condition persists (belt tensioning is not performed,) the skipping can cause the pulley surface to wear quickly, and loose its mating shape with the belt, eventually destroying the pulley and the belt.  In the fall of 2003 we change the secondary pulley to carbon steel, and this problem no longer occurs.
