At ElectroRide, quality improvement is a continuous process. It was not easy to improve our Phoenix power systems, but we did it. Phoenix II is the next generation of Phoenix motors, 1/2 the weight, but with the same Phoenix performance. And while we were on our weight reduction program we  eliminated the Hall effect sensors. That requires a more intelligent controller, but it removes the only active components left in the motor. The occasional sensor failure is a thing of the past with Phoenix II. We elected to drop the Phoenix Racer and focus on Cruiser and Brute. Additional speed can be achieved with higher voltage, and most people ride stop-and-go and/or have hills, and Cruiser and Brute are more efficient in these environments. We will consider having Racers manufactured if enough customers ask for them.

The Phoenix Racer on a 26" wheel with a fully inflated street tire is about all a 180 lb rider can manage on a dry, paved surface. You won't be able to ride at full speed in city traffic in most places. These systems exceed power and speed limits established by the federal law that defines a bicycle, so ride on-road at your own risk. We give you choices, but you must use good judgment. Choose a bike with good brakes, inspect them often, and replace worn shoes or pads as needed. You'll be putting a lot more miles on an electric bike than a pedal bike, and brakes become very important at the speeds you will reach.

Compare Phoenix and Phoenix II
These are the main differences between the original Phoenix and the Phoenix II. Details will be added as they become available.

PHOENIX

Motor Weight:
Front - 23.5lbs
Rear - 23.5lbs

PHOENIX II

Motor Weight:
Front - 10lbs
Rear -  16.25lbs (Rear Phoenix II motors have more torque than front Phoenix II motors.)

Technology:  3 phase brushless - SENSORLESS!

Power indicator: APM-Display
Desc:  Active Power Management Display - The APM-Display is a dashboard display panel that not only displays battery voltage, current, speed, etc, but it also allows the user to limit the current output. All features and details of the APM-Display will be listed separately when available.

There are four motors in the Phoenix II Series. They are all brushless motors and can be used with 36 volt 25 amp (X-CT3625E), 48 volt 25 amp (X-CT4825E), 36 volt 40 amp (X-CT3640E), 48 volt 40 amp (X-CT4840E), and 72 volt 40 amp (X-CT7204E) controllers. Phoenix II motors are available for front and rear on 20 inch, 24 inch, 26 inch, and 700c wheels.

There are many changes and improvements to our Phoenix II product line. While we have been testing for months, we are still collecting data. Our testing process is rigorous, it exceeds the demands placed on them by most of our customers. We figure if we can't destroy them when actually trying to, odds of survival in the field are very high. Nothing is indestructible, but some of the first systems we sold are still in use with over 36,000 miles and counting! Phoenix and Phoenix II systems can last forever when used as intended, which has been our goal since the very first day. Our testing processes take time and aren't cheap, but they have paid off.

The Phoenix II has survived our reliability testing. Over the next few weeks we'll be adding "real world" specs as we acquire them. What we're starting with are the specs Crystalyte has provided, and an understanding that they might not be completely accurate. Those already familiar with us know we create our own specs based on real-world conditions....not "hopes". If anything changes dramatically between the preliminary specs and final specs, we'll be sure to make a point of it.  We are accepting pre-orders, but a pre-order is not a commitment on your part to buy, and no money changes hands until we actually ship.

Phoenix II motors are
- Brushless
- Sensorless
- Gearless
- Disc brake compatible
- Rim brake compatible
- Very efficient
- Very low resistance
- Very light weight (10lbs front - 16.25lbs rear)
- Available in front (standard 100mm wide) and rear (standard 135mm wide)
- Available in Brute (higher torque, lower speed) and Cruiser (lower torque, higher speed) motors
- Available on 20, 24, 26, and 700c rims

Phoenix II controllers are
- Compatible with all Phoenix motors from Generation 1 to Phoenix II
- Compatible with all RoadRunner motors
- Available in power range from 900 watts to 2,880 watts
- Compatible with all our Phoenix II accessories
- Compatible with our Active Power Management Display (APM-Display)

We've worked hard to do the right things to make sure we can support our longtime customers now and in the future. All Phoenix II controllers will work with all Phoenix motors -- from Gen 1 to Phoenix II. All our throttles, cruise controls, reverse switches, etc. are compatible with all Phoenix II controllers. Phoenix controllers Rev D and below will NOT run sensorless motors, but we've even taken care of that by having  Phoenix II motors manufactured with sensors in case a customer with an older controller needs one. These Phoenix II motors with sensors will also be sold with Gen 1 Phoenix or RoadRunner controllers to those who still want to purchase a kit at the Phoenix I and RoadRunner price. While most see these improvements as being well worth the extra $250 per kit, we realize they may not be necessary to everyone..

Customers who have 16 inch wheels will have to use RoadRunner, which we continue to stock and support. Phoenix is too large for a 16 inch rim. We recommend 3625 or 4825 controllers for the RoadRunner motor. You can use a 3640, 4840, or 7240, but our testing indicates much of the energy is wasted as heat in the smaller diameter motor.

Check back here for more information, we will post it here, and eventually we'll get the website updated with all the new specs. We thank you for your patience and continued support. We're looking forward to an exciting 2011.

Federal  Speed limit for electric bikes is 20 MPH. We don't expect law enforcement in most cities to have a problem with 23 MPH nor with some increased power. Most cities support green transportation. Some states allow electric bikes to go 30 MPH. Drive responsibly and always wear a helmet.

Shown is one of our bikes with a complete Phoenix 4840 system installed using our custom electric bike battery hangers. Despite its innocent appearance, this electric bike will do 36+ MPH.
