Electric Mountain Drive for Upright Bikes and hard to fit Recumbents
Our Electric Mountain Drive™ (EMtnD) is our newest electric drive system. Designed to fit almost any bike, including road bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes with or without suspension, long cargo bikes, semi-recumbents and recumbent tadpole trikes. The EMtnD comes with a special motor driven freewheeling crankset that replaces your current one. This allows the motor to propel the bike without forcing you to pedal along. When you decide to pedal, the freewheel engages and blends your leg power with the motor power.
Attach one to your bike or trike and climb the steepest hills, even on singletrack trails, and carry heavy cargo up hills without effort. It's a whole new way to bike and the greenest form of powered transport there is.
Electric Mountain Drive Units
In keeping with our philosophy of "no one-size-fits-all", there are several variations of our Electric Mountain Drive for different types of bikes and trikes. Also within each type, you have a choice of single or triple chainring variants and two different motor power levels. Carefully read the following to determine which is right for you. If you have a standard upright bike and want our lowest cost assist unit, which will still outperform anything on the market, choose the Type 1 with BMC motor and single chainring.
All EMtnD units use precision CNC machined clamps to attach the unit to your frame. See the section on Clamps and Brackets to choose the correct one.
Requirements
Your bike must have a round frame tube where the unit will mount. This is the down tube (the diagonal tube behind the front wheel) on upright bikes, or the boom on recumbents. We don't have clamps for non-round frame tubes yet, but they are planned. The down tube or boom must have a straight section that joins the bottom bracket of sufficient length (6 to 8 inches, 150 to 200mm) to mount the unit. The bottom bracket should have a 68mm shell with 1.37" English threads -- this is most bikes. Other bottom brackets can be accomodated with a bit of tweaking.
Electric Mountain Drive Unit 700W EcoSpeed motor system, Type 1: Upright Bikes
Our smaller, lightweight, quieter motor with EcoSpeed's new fully digital controller. This intelligent motor controller will work with almost any battery system from 24 volts through 48 volts. You can use a small battery to save weight or cost, or a large one for maximum performance. The controller will automatically adjust for whatever power that the battery can supply up to the rated maximum of the motor. The controller is software based, so that as we add features you can upgrade your controller to take advantage of them. Price includes clamps, choose sizes below.

Add the Cycle Analyst watt-hour meter. Accurately tracks the amount of charge removed from the battery. More useful that so-called battery fuel guages which attempt to guess how much charge is left. Clamp and Bracket Sets for Type 1
Our newest Electric Mountain Drive Type 1 drive systems use an innovative mounting system that attaches to both the left and right sides of your bottom bracket. No additional clamps or brackets are necessary. This also means that we can now fit bikes with non-round or curved down tubes.
Clamp and Bracket Sets for Type 2
A key part of our Exact Fit Technology™, clamp sets are precision machined to fit a particular frame type and size. In addition to getting one of the drive units above, you will need a clamp or bracket set to fit your particular frame. See the descriptions below to figure out what you need. Fits standard round down tubes on upright bikes or round front booms on recumbent bikes and trikes. Sizes up to 1.75 inches (45mm). We keep all common sizes in stock. If we don't have yours, we will make it.
